Your mattress is one of the most important pieces of furniture in your home. The average person spends over 26 years of their life in bed. Yet, despite this, mattress care is often neglected. Properly maintaining your mattress doesn't just keep it looking good — it significantly extends its lifespan, improves hygiene, and enhances your sleep quality.
Why Mattress Maintenance Matters
Over time, mattresses accumulate dust mites, dead skin cells, sweat, body oils, and allergens. These elements degrade the structural integrity of the mattress and can trigger allergies, disrupt sleep, and create an unhealthy sleeping environment. Regular care keeps your investment performing at its best for years.
A good mattress protector is your first and most powerful line of defence. It acts as a barrier against spills, sweat, and allergens, while adding virtually no impact on comfort.
Your Monthly & Seasonal Care Routine
Monthly Vacuum
Use an upholstery attachment to remove dust, dead skin, and debris from all surfaces.
Rotate Seasonally
Rotate head-to-foot every 3 months to distribute wear evenly and prevent sagging.
Air It Out
Strip the bed and let your mattress breathe without sheets for a few hours monthly.
Use a Protector
A quality, breathable mattress protector should always be in use — wash it monthly.
How to Handle Spills and Stains
Act immediately when spills occur. Blot — never rub — with a clean, dry cloth to absorb as much liquid as possible. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the fibres. After blotting, use a mild cleaning solution:
- General stains: Mix cold water with a few drops of dish soap. Spray lightly and blot clean.
- Urine stains: Spray with a 50/50 white vinegar and water solution, blot, then sprinkle baking soda. Leave 8 hours then vacuum.
- Blood stains: Always use cold water. Apply hydrogen peroxide with a cloth and blot gently.
- Sweat stains: Baking soda paste left for 30 minutes, then vacuumed, works effectively.
Never soak your mattress. Excess moisture trapped inside can lead to mould and mildew growth — always use minimal liquid and allow complete drying before remaking the bed.
Deodorising Your Mattress
Baking soda is a natural and highly effective mattress deodoriser. Strip your bedding, sprinkle a generous layer over the entire mattress surface, and allow it to sit for a minimum of 30 minutes. The baking soda absorbs odour-causing compounds. Then thoroughly vacuum it all up. For a fresh scent, add a few drops of lavender or eucalyptus essential oil to the baking soda.
What to Avoid
- Never use harsh chemical cleaners or bleach on your mattress
- Avoid getting the mattress overly wet during cleaning
- Do not jump on the mattress — it damages the internal structure
- Avoid using a steam cleaner unless the manufacturer recommends it
- Don't fold or bend the mattress, especially spring or latex types
Signs It's Time for a New Mattress
Even the best-maintained mattress has a finite lifespan. If your mattress is 8–10 years old, shows visible sagging or lumps, or causes you to wake with aches and pains, it may be time to invest in a new Snoooze premium mattress — built to last with the right care.
